2020 Presidential Primaries, Caucuses, and Conventions

The delegate selection processes herein, along with any and all dates and delegate counts associated therewith, are unofficial and based on either (1) information obtained from either Major Party, (2) Presidential Primary dates established by currently-effective State statute, or- where the foregoing information could not be obtained- (3) the state's 2016 delegate selection process and associated dates adjusted to the corresponding dates in 2020.

Democrats

  • Democratic Bonus Delegates and penalties are preliminary.

Republicans

  • Republican delegate counts are based on the number of Republicans elected to the State Legislatures, Governors chairs, U.S. House seats, and U.S. Senators seats through 31 December 2019. Republican unpledged delegate counts are determined by state (or equivalent) party rules. We have assumed that the policies of 2016 will apply in 2020.
  • The Republican district delegate count is based on the number of U.S. House members each state will elect in 2020.
  • Republican penalties for violating the timing window are not included in these delegate tallies.

This Presidential Primary coincides with a state/local primary. These coinciding primaries tend to have an impact upon voter turnout.

Participation in New Mexico's delegate selection process is open to all voters registered as Democrats.

Tuesday 2 June 2020: New Mexico Primary. Hours reportedly 7:00a-7:00p MDT (1300-0100 UTC). Delegate Pledging: Proportional Primary. Voter Eligibility: Closed Primary.

Tuesday 2 June 2020: 34 of 45 delegates to the Democratic National Convention are pledged to presidential contenders based on the results of the voting in today's New Mexico Primary. A mandatory 15 percent threshold is required in order for a presidential contender to be allocated National Convention delegates at either the congressional district or statewide level.   • 23 district delegates are to be allocated proportionally to presidential contenders based on the Primary results in each of the State's 3 congressional districts.
  • In addition, 11 delegates are to be allocated to presidential contenders based on the Primary vote statewide.
    • 7 at-large National Convention delegates
    • 4 Pledged PLEOs

Saturday 13 June 2020: District Conventions. National Convention District delegates are elected by state delegates according to the results of the Presidential Primary.

 

Saturday 20 June 2020: State Post-Primary Convention.

State Post-Primary Convention elects National Convention Pledged PLEO and At-large delegates according to the statewide results of the Presidential Primary.

The remaining 11 National Convention delegates consist of

  • 11 Unpledged PLEO delegates:
    • 4 Democratic National Committee members.
    • 5 Members of Congress (2 Senators and 3 Representatives).
    • 1 Governor.
    • 1 Distinguished Party Leader (former Democratic National Committee Chairman Fred Roy Harris).

These 11 delegates and will go to the Democratic National Convention officially "Unpledged".
