Virginia 2012 Presidential Primaries, Caucuses, and Conventions:
Democrats, Republicans, Third Parties

Parties may decide to select their candidate by convention or by primary.

Virginia law states that there will be no primary in races "when less than two candidates declare".

23 January 2012: A Virginia House subcommittee passed HB 55. Beginning in 2016, the bill would move the statewide primary from June to March.

24 January 2012 updated 2 February 2012: New bills-- HB 736 would move the Virginia 2012 statewide primary from 12 June to 7 August to allow additional time for the 2012 Congressional District boundaries to be established. HB 1151 would allow candidates for the U.S. Senate to collect petition signatures using the 2000 Congressional District boundaries. The bill would take effect if the new districts are not settled by 20 March 2012.

"FEC" indicates the Federal Election Commission (FEC) Campaign Finance Summary.

When available, we post each candidate's FEC identification number, the date of their most recently filed Report of Receipts and Disbursements, their "Tot" [Total Receipts (contributions received or what came in: FEC Form 3, Line 16, Column B)] and their "Dsb" [Total Disbursements (expenditures or what was spent: FEC Form 3, Line 23, Column B)]. A link is provided to the Federal Election Commission's Summary Report for those who might wish to explore the details.

If a candidate raises or spends $5,000 or less, he or she is not subject to FEC reporting requirements.
