Congressman John Michael "Mick" Mulvaney (Republican), who was first elected in 2010, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Trump Administration on 16 February 2017. He was nominated on 16 December 2016 by President-elect Trump. A special partisan primary to fill his vacant seat was held on 2 May 2017. Since no one received a majority in either party, there was a partisan primary runoff on 16 May 2017.
