Senator John Hardy "Johnny" Isakson, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2010 and 2016, will resign on 31 December 2019 due to his battle with Parkinson's. He announced his resignation on 28 August 2019: "After much prayer and consultation with my family and my doctors, I have made the very tough decision to leave the U.S. Senate at the end of this year. I have informed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp today that I will resign my Senate seat effective December 31, 2019...."
Senator Isakson also served in U.S. House- having been first elected in a special election (to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Member of Congress Newt Gingrich) in 1999; and re-elected in 2000 and 2002.
Governor Brian Porter Kemp (Republican) will appoint a replacement to fill the seat until a special election is held for the remaining 2 years of the term.
