5 February 2010: To comply with a new federal law, which requires that the states allow 45 days for overseas voters to mail back their ballots, Minnesota may move the state's election to 10 August, 5 weeks earlier. 15 February 2010: The Minnesota Senate passed SF 2251 which moves 14 September 2010 primary to 10 August. 1 March 2010: The Minnesota Senate approved SF 2251. 3 March 2010: Governor Tim Pawlenty signed SF 2251 into law. This actions moves state's primary from the first Tuesday after the second Monday in September (14 September 2010) to the second Tuesday in August (10 August 2010). The change allows Minnesota to conform to recently enacted federal legislation known as The Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act. The MOVE Act is intended to aid the registration and participation of U.S. military and overseas voters. |
