11 December 2009: Congressman Abercrombie announced he would resign from the U.S. House before the end of his term. Due to budget constraints, the election to fill the remainder of the term may be held concurrently with the regular September 2010 primary. Other reports indicate there may be a May 2010 special election. The primary will cost over $1M and their is no money budged for it. Hawaii law does not set a timetable for calling a special election after a vacancy. In the special election, all candidates run on a single ballot, there is no party primary. The candidate receiving the most votes is elected.
5 January 2010: Congressman Abercrombie announced that he will resign from Congress on 28 February 2010.
25 February 2010: The state Office of Elections tentatively called a Special Election for Saturday 22 May 2010 to fill this vacant seat. There is no primary. The candidate receiving the most votes in the Special Election will fill the remainder of Congressman Abercrombie's term which ends in January 2011.
28 February 2010: Resigned.
