2010 Congressional Candidates

  • Congressional candidates run in a First Party Primary on the fourth Saturday in August with each recognized party running a slate of candidates. If a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, that candidate receives his or her party's nomination. Otherwise, the top two vote getters proceed to a Congressional Second Primary (a runoff) held the first Saturday in October.
  • At each party's discretion, voter eligibility in this partisan primary would be either closed (party members only) or modified open (party members and independents). As of June 2006, the Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, Green, and Reform parties are recogized.
  • If only one party candidate files in a primary, that candidate is nominated and there is no primary.
  • Each party's nominee along with independent candidates (qualified by petition) run in the November General Election where the candidate receiving the most votes is elected.

25 June 2010: House Bill 292 is signed by Governor Bobby Jindal. Effective in 2011, Louisiana will return to their "open primary" system (reference: House Bill 292). There are no party primaries. The state holds its general election on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. In this election, all candidates from all parties appear on the ballot. A runoff is held on the first Saturday in December (between the top two vote getters) if no one candidate receive 50% of the vote.

28 August 2010: Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican primary returns from an official source.

2 October 2010 Lt. Governor open primary and U.S. House CD 3 Republican runoff returns from an official source.
