	Member of Congress Sheila Jackson Lee (Democratic), who was first elected in 1994, passed away from pancreatic cancer on 19 July 2024. 3 June 2024: "My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis for pancreatic cancer ... I am currently undergoing treatment ... The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me." 2 August 2024: A Special Election was called by Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) to fill the vacant seat for the term ending in January 2025. The filing deadline is 22 August 2024. In Special Elections, all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run on a single ballot. If one candidate receives a majority of the vote, that candidate is elected. Otherwise, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff. 5 August 2024: The Harris County Democratic Party Executive Committee will meet 13 August to select a replacement nominee. The party nominated former Mayor Sylvester Turner. 5 November 2024: Erica Lee Carter (Democratic), daughter of former Member of Congress Rep Sheila Jackson Lee, is elected in a Special Election to fill the seat for the remainder of the term ending in January 2025.
