Parties may decide to select their candidate by convention or by primary. Virginia law states that there will be no primary in races "when less than two candidates declare". Parties may choose to nominate by convention rather than by primary election. The deadline to notify the State Board of Elections of the adoption of the primary election is 25 February 2014.
