The delegate selection processes herein was updated on 2 May 2012 per the 2012 Delegate Selection Plan As Approved by the State Executive Council on 5/25/2011.

The state received a 20% pledged delegate bonus for starting in Stage III (May and June).

Starting on Tuesday 20 March 2012, a 15% pledged delegate bonus is awarded when clusters of 3 or more neighboring states begin on the same date.

Tuesday 8 May 2012: 139 of 157 delegates to the Democratic National Convention are pledged to presidential contenders based on the results of the voting in today's North Carolina Presidential Primary. A mandatory 15 percent threshold is required in order for a presidential contender to be allocated National Convention delegates at either the congressional district or statewide level.

  • 93 district delegates are to be pledged proportionally to presidential contenders based on the primary results in each of the State's 13 congressional districts.

    • CD 3: 6
    • CD 4: 11
    • CD 5: 6
    • CD 6: 5
    • CD 7: 7
    • CD 8: 6
    • CD 9: 7
    • CD 10: 5

  • In addition, 46 delegates are to be allocated to presidential contenders based on the primary vote statewide.
    • 31 at-large National Convention delegates
    • 15 Pledged PLEOs

Saturday 19 May 2012 - Congressional District Convention Presidential Preference Caucuses. National Convention district level delegates are selected according to the results of the primary.

 

Saturday 16 June 2012: State Convention

The State Convention selects National Convention Pledged PLEO and At-Large delegates according to the results of the primary.

The remaining 18 National Convention delegates consist of

  • 18 Unpledged PLEO delegates:
    • 9 Democratic National Committee members.
    • 8 Members of Congress (1 Senator and 7 Representatives).
    • 1 Governor.
    • 0 Distinguished Party Leaders.

These 18 delegates and will go to the Democratic National Convention officially "Unpledged".


Notes:

On 28 March 2011, state Senator Andrew C. Brock (Republican) filed S440. This bill would move the Presidential Primary from the Tuesday after the 1st Monday in May to the 1st Tuesday in March.
