| Massachusetts lost 1 U.S. House seat in the 2010 Census and will elected 9 Representatives in 2012. 22 January 2011: Libertarian candidates will run on the "Liberty" ballot line in 2012. On 21 January 2011 H01972 was filed. This bill would change the state's partisan and Presidential primaries to be held concurrently on the 1st Tuesday in June-- 5 June 2012. Current law sets the Presidential Primary to the 1st Tuesday in March and the Partisan Primary to 7th Tuesday preceding the November General Election [The General Laws of Massachusetts, Title VIII, Chapter 53: Section 28.]. The bill's sponsors are Representatives James J. Dwyer (Democratic) and Bradley H. Jones (Republican). On 11 November 2011, Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick (Democratic) signed HB 3788. The bill moves the regular non-Presidential Primary from Tuesday 18 September 2012 to Thursday 6 September 2012. The previous date for the primary, Tuesday 18 September 2011, conflicts with Rosh Hashanah and violates the MOVE Act (does not allow sufficient time between the Primary and General Elections for overseas ballots to be returned). "SECTION 8A. (a) Notwithstanding section 28 of chapter 53 of the General Laws, or any other general or special law to the contrary, the state primary for the calendar year 2012 shall be held on Thursday, September 6." |

| Political Parties Parties appear in parenthesis and italics when a candidate receives the endorsement of a given Party and/or official sources indicate a candidate's association with a particular Party but only where the Party in question does not appear on the actual ballot as such. |
| Major Parties | |
| Democratic (affiliates): 17 incumbents, 16 candidates | |
| Republican: 1 incumbent, 9 candidates | |
| Candidates running under the banner of more than one party are counted towards each party's total. A candidate who has lost a primary or is apparently no longer a candidate is not counted. | |
| Notes |
| Candidates for office appear on this page in italics where 'The Green Papers' does not yet have independent confirmation from a legal election authority that the person has been officially certified to appear on the ballot. |
| "FEC" indicates the Federal Election Commission (FEC) Campaign Finance Summary. When available, we post each candidate's FEC identification number, the date of their most recently filed Report of Receipts and Disbursements, their "Tot" [Total Receipts (contributions received or what came in: FEC Form 3, Line 16, Column B)] and their "Dsb" [Total Disbursements (expenditures or what was spent: FEC Form 3, Line 23, Column B)]. A link is provided to the Federal Election Commission's Summary Report for those who might wish to explore the details. If a candidate raises or spends $5,000 or less, he or she is not subject to FEC reporting requirements. |
