Libertarian Party 2008 Delegate Allocation Details

The calculation used to determine number of delegates allocated to each state's Libertarian Party delegation is as follows:

  • One delegate for each 0.14% of the "sustaining" nationwide membership in that state as of 31 December 2007. Round any fractions to the next largest whole number.
    [Column A = (state members ÷ nationwide members) ÷ 0.0014, rounded up]
    • "Sustaining" members are those who have given $25 to the party in the prior 12 months. This is roughly equivalent to the discontinued dues-based membership.
    • Change: In 2004, the computation used 1 delegate for each 0.1% of party membership.
  • One delegate for each 0.35% of the votes cast nationwide for the 2004 Libertarian Party's National Presidential nominee Michael Badnarik. Round any fractions to the next largest whole number.
    [Column B = (state vote ÷ nationwide vote) ÷ 0.0035, rounded up]
    • Change: In 2004, the computation used 1 delegate for each 0.25% of the votes cast nationwide for the 2000 Libertarian Party's National Presidential nominee.

Total the delegates from the two criteria to determine the number of delegates the state will send to the Libertarian Party Convention.

The source for Presidential Vote is The Federal Election Commission. The Libertarian Party has accepted an affidavit from the Oklahoma chair attesting that he voted for Michael Badnarik as a write-in presidential candidate because the Party did not gain ballot access. For the purpose of delegate allocation, the Party considers that 1 person in Oklahoma voted for Libertarian nominee for President in 2004.
