The delegate selection processes herein was updated 28 May 2012 per the Delegate Selection Process.

Starting on Tuesday 20 March 2012, a 15% pledged delegate bonus is awarded when clusters of 3 or more neighboring states begin on the same date.

The state received a 20% pledged delegate bonus for starting in Stage III (May and June).

Randall A. Terry submitted 1,765 signatures for the Democratic Presidential primary but his petitons were successfully challenged so he does not appear on the ballot.

Participation in New Jersey's delegate selection process is open to all voters registered as Democrats. A detail: "Independent" voters are ineligible to vote in the Democratic Primary, however, "Unaffiliated" voters are eligible to participate with the understanding that their party affiliation will automatically change to Democrat upon casting their vote.

Tuesday 5 June 2012: 153 of 172 delegates to the Democratic National Convention are pledged to presidential contenders based on the results of the voting in today's New Jersey Presidential Primary. A mandatory 15 percent threshold is required in order for a presidential contender to be allocated National Convention delegates at either the congressional district or statewide level.

  • 102 delegates are to be pledged proportionally to presidential contenders based on the primary results in each of 20 "delegate districts" (unlike the Democratic Parties in most other states, New Jersey's Democrats will not be allocating the state's district delegates to the Democratic National Convention by congressional district but, instead, will utilize 20 special "delegate districts", each of which will consist of two Legislative Districts paired together. (New Jersey elects its State Legislature by Legislative District shared by both the Senate [the upper house] and the General Assembly [the lower house]: each of the state's 40 Legislative Districts [LD] elects 1 of the 40 state senators and 2 of the 80 state assemblymen)... the number of district delegates to the Democratic National Convention per "delegate district" (DD) is as follows:
    • DD 1 (LDs 1&2): 5 delegates
    • DD 2 (LDs 3&4): 5 delegates
    • DD 3 (LDs 5&6): 6 delegates
    • DD 4 (LDs 7&8): 6 delegates
    • DD 5 (LDs 9&10): 4 delegates
    • DD 6 (LDs 11&13): 5 delegates
    • DD 7 (LDs 12&30): 4 delegates
    • DD 8 (LDs 14&15): 6 delegates
    • DD 9 (LDs 16&17): 5 delegates
    • DD 10 (LDs 18&19): 5 delegates
    • DD 11 (LDs 20&22): 5 delegates
    • DD 12 (LDs 21&27): 6 delegates
    • DD 13 (LDs 23&24): 4 delegates
    • DD 14 (LDs 25&26): 4 delegates
    • DD 15 (LDs 28&29): 6 delegates
    • DD 16 (LDs 31&33): 5 delegates
    • DD 17 (LDs 32&36): 5 delegates
    • DD 18 (LDs 34&35): 6 delegates
    • DD 19 (LDs 37&38): 5 delegates
    • DD 20 (LDs 39&40): 5 delegates
  • In addition, 51 delegates are to be pledged to presidential contenders based on the primary vote statewide.
    • 34 at-large National Convention delegates
    • 17 Pledged PLEOs

National Convention District delegates slates are approved by each Presidential candidate prior to the primary.

Notes:

Note: New Jersey Statutes Title 19:2-1 states "Presidential primary elections ... shall be held ... on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in February". That would be 7 February 2012. The New Jersey Democratic Party has developed their plan assuming pending legislation (A3777, A757, S71) to move the Presidential primary to 5 June 2012 becomes law. Update: On 26 September 2011 A3777 bill was signed into law.

Three bills, A3777 introduced by Assemblyman Jonh S. Wisniewski (Democratic) on 10 February 2011; A757 introduced by Assemblyman John DiMaio (Republican) on 12 January 2010 (pushed from the last session); and S71 introduced by Senator Michael J. Doherty (Republican) on 12 January 2010 (pushed from the last session) would all change the date of the state's Presidential Primary from "Tuesday next after the first Monday in February" to "Tuesday next after the first Monday in June"-- the date of the state's regular primary.

On 19 May 2011, state Senator Donald Norcross (Democratic) introduced S2883. This bill would consolidate the partisan primary for Federal, state, and local offices with the Presidential primary on Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in June.

On 26 September 2011, Lieutenant Governor Kimberly M. "Kim" Guadagno (Republican)-- the acting governor while Governor Christopher J. "Chris" Christie (Republican) is out of state-- signed A3777. The 2012 New Jersey Presidential primary will be held on the same date as the state's partisan primary: "Tuesday next after the first Monday in June".
