She will become Governor on 20 January 2026. 21 November 2025: Governor Philip "Phil" Murphy (Democratic) called a Special Election to fill the vacant seat. The Special Partisan Primary is 5 February 2026 and the Special General Election is 16 April 2026. The filing deadline is 1 December 2025 for the primary and 5 February 2026 for independents. | 7 April 2025: Governor Greg Abbott (Republican) announces a 4 November 2025 Special Election to fill the vacant seat of former Member of Congress Sylvester Turner (Democratic), who passed away on 5 March 2025. The filing deadline is 3 September 2025. In Special Elections, all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run on a single ballot. If one candidate receives a majority of the vote, that candidate is elected.
