NOTE re: elections to the LEGISLATURE

CALIFORNIA elects half of its 40-member State Senate every two years, State Senators so elected serving four-year terms.

In 2008, State Senators representing the odd-numbered Senatorial Districts: these being 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37 and 39 are up for election to 4-year terms; State Senators from the remaining 20 Senatorial Districts were elected to four-year terms in 2006 and will be up for election again in 2010.

The entire 80-member Assembly is elected every two years and, thus, all 80 Assemblymen are up for election in 2008.

On 2 January 2008, Congressman Lantos announced that he has esophageal cancer and will not run for re-election. He passed away on 11 February 2008 at the age of 80. Jackie Speier (Democratic) won the seat in the 8 April 2008 special election.

If one candidate receives a majority of the votes (50%+1) in the 8 April 2008 Special Primary, that candidate is elected. Otherwise, the top vote getter from each party will proceed to a special general election on 3 June 2008.

Democrat Jackie Speier, having received more than 50% of the vote, is elected on 8 April 2008 to the U.S. House. There will be no runoff on 3 June 2008.
