Democratic Congressman Marty Meehan (Massachusetts CD 5) submitted his resignation from Congress 9 May 2006, effective 1 July 2007. He was chosen to be the next Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Lowell on 13 March 2007. Massachusetts Governor Patrick called a special election to fill the vacant seat. The primary will be on 4 September and the general election on 16 October 2007. The deadline for filing nomination papers is 5:00p 31 July 2007 for party candidates and 4 September 2007 for non-party candidates.
