This Special Election, necessitated by the resignation of Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham on 28 November 2005, is in addition to the Primary Election being held at the same time in this CD.

The SPECIAL ELECTION will elect a Congressman to serve until the expiration of the 109th Congress at Noon, 3 January 2007; the concurrent PRIMARY ELECTION, meanwhile, will choose Party nominees who will run against each other in the General Election on 7 November 2006 for the full two-year term in the 110th Congress, beginning at Noon on 3 January 2007.

former Congressman Brian Phillip Bilbray (Republican) has been elected.

The San Diego Country Registrar of Voters reports that as of 13 April 4:58 PM PDT there are approximately 1,000 Absentee / Provisional ballots to be counted. Since Mr. Bilbray (15.27%) leads Mr. Roach (14.50%) by 1,053 votes, Mr. Bilbray will be the Republican nominee.

  • 14 July 2005: Congressman Cunningham, under investigation for his activities with a defense contractor, announced that he would not seek re-election. Congressman Cunningham was first elected in 1990.
  • 28 November 2005: Republican Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham (CA-CD 50) resigned from the U.S. House after pleading guilty to Federal charges involving bribes, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion.
  • Thursday 15 December 2005: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called an 11 April Special Primary and a 6 June 2006 Special Runoff Election to fill the vacant California U.S. House CD 50 seat caused by the 28 November 2005 resignation of Republican Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the Special Primary, the top vote getter from each party will participated in the Special Runoff.
  • 3 March 2006: Former 64 year old Congressman Cunningham was sentenced to 8 years 4 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns. Mr. Cunningham is to pay $1.8 million in back taxes and forfeit the $1.85 million in valuables he received. He was immediately taken into custody.
  • 6 June 2006: Republican Brian Phillip Bilbray elected.
