Time-line:1 June 2004: Democrat Stephanie Herseth wins special election to fill the vacant seat. 22 January 2004: Circuit Judge Rodney Steele sentenced former (1 term) Congressman and former (4 term) South Dakota Governor William Janklow to 100 days in jail, 3 years of probation, and approximately $5,000 in fines and court costs. After serving 30 days, Mr. Janklow will be allowed to leave jail to perform community service. His driving privileges are revoked during the probationary period. 20 January 2004: Congressman William Janklow, who was first elected to the House in 2002 and previously served 4 terms as Governor of South Dakota, resigns from the House of Representatives. 8 December 2003: Congressman Janklow announces he will resign effective January 20, 2004. Letter of Resignation:
27 September 2003: Congressman Janknow pleads innocent to the charges of manslaughter. 29 August 2003: Charges of manslaughter filed. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Representative Janklow struck and killed a motorcyclist on 16 August. The charges include one count of failing to stop at a stop sign, one count of driving "at least" 71 mph in a 55 mph zone, and one count of reckless driving. 16 August 2003: Congressman Janklow involved in a fatal accident with a motorcyclist. | |||||
