preview re: General Election in NEW JERSEY-
Tuesday 5 November 2002

Polls close: 8 PM Eastern Standard Time
(0100 UTC, Wed 6 Nov)

  • NEW JERSEY is NOT electing its Governor in 2002.
  • NEW JERSEY is electing its U.S. Senator in the "Class 2" seat in 2002; this is an Open Seat, as incumbent Democrat Robert Torricelli, who was a candidate for re-election to the Senate in the General Election, withdrew his candidacy as of 30 September 2002: the Senator's name was thereafter replaced on the ballot (the New Jersey Supreme Court, on 2 October, allowed the Democrats to replace Senator Torricelli's name on the ballot; the U.S. Supreme Court, on 7 October, refused to hear an appeal by Republicans from the New Jersey court's ruling).
  • NEW JERSEY is electing 13 Members of Congress (U.S. House of Representatives) in 2002; the State did not gain nor lose a House seat as a result of the 2000 Census.
  • There are no House seats which will have incumbents running against one another in the General Election.

  • Members of Congress currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, 107th Congress from the State of NEW JERSEY not seeking re-election in the 5 November 2002 General Election:

    Incumbent Party District
    [per 1990
    Apportionment ]
    Reason for not
    seeking re-election
Marge Roukema Republican CD # 5 voluntary retirement

Open Seats [those in which an incumbent is not running for re-election] in the U.S. House from NEW JERSEY in the 5 November 2002 General Election [NOTE—Districts are those per 2000 Apportionment ]:

    • CD 5

Uncontested Major Races [for Governor, U.S. Senate or U.S. House] in the 5 November 2002 General Election in NEW JERSEY:

    None.

Governor  Term Limit: 2 consecutive 4-year terms, Governors

Democrat Governor James E. ["Jim"] McGreevey
First elected: 2001
Chair up for election: Tuesday 8 November 2005
The current Governor is NOT affected by this state's term limit.
Tuesday 8 January 2002 - from Noon EST (1700 UTC) today until Noon EST (1700 UTC) on Tuesday 15 January 2002, the duties of Acting Governor of NEW JERSEY will be shared by Democrat State Senator Richard J. Codey and Republican State Senator John O. Bennett who will- after Noon (1700 UTC), 8 January- be co-Presidents of the State Senate. The reason for this is that the Senate term of Acting Governor (and outgoing State Senate President) Donald T. DeFrancesco will have ended when the Legislature elected in last November's elections takes office at Noon (1700 UTC) on 8 January: since Governor-elect James E. McGreevey will NOT take office for a full 4-year term until Noon (1700 UTC) on 15 January and the new NJ State Senate is split along party lines- 20 Democrats to 20 Republicans- this rather unique situation, lasting a week, has been created due to the fact that the State Constitution of New Jersey has not provided for a Lieutenant Governor or some similar state official to fill a vacancy in the State's Governor's Chair.

2 October 2002- In a unanimous ruling, the New Jersey Supreme Court decided that the Democrats could replace the name of Senator Bob Torricelli on the ballot with that of former Senator Lautenberg.
1 October 2002 - Governor Jim McGreevey announced that (pending NJ Supreme Court approval) former Senator Frank Lautenberg would replace incumbent Senator Robert Torricelli as the Democratic candidate for the Class 2 Senate seat in the 5 November election.
Withdrawn Democrat Senator Robert G. Torricelli - withdrew
7 October 2002- With the U.S. Supreme Court having refused to hear an appeal from the 2 October ruling of the NJ Supreme Court, Senator Torricelli's name will now be legally replaced on the General Election ballot by that of former Senator Frank Lautenberg.
