  • Congressman Robert Latta (Republican, Ohio CD 5) was elected 11 December 2007 to fill the vacant seat.
  • Congressman Rob Wittman (Republican, Virginia CD 1) was elected 11 December 2007 to fill the vacant seat.
  • Congressman Tom Lantos (Democrat, California CD 12) passed away 11 February 2008 at the age of 80 from esophageal cancer.
  • Congressman G. William "Bill" Foster (Democrat, Illinois House CD 14) was elected 8 March 2008 to fill the vacant seat.
  • Congressman Jackie Speier (Democratic, California CD 12) was elected 8 April 2008 to fill the vacant seat.

On 2 January 2008, Congressman Lantos announced that he has esophageal cancer and will not run for re-election. He passed away on 11 February 2008 at the age of 80. Jackie Speier (Democratic) won the seat in the 8 April 2008 special election.

If one candidate receives a majority of the votes (50%+1) in the 8 April 2008 Special Primary, that candidate is elected. Otherwise, the top vote getter from each party will proceed to a special general election on 3 June 2008.

Democrat Jackie Speier, having received more than 50% of the vote, is elected on 8 April 2008 to the U.S. House. There will be no runoff on 3 June 2008.

On 31 December 2007, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour chose Republican Congressman Roger Wicker, who was first elected to Congress in 1994, to fill the vacant U.S. Senate Class 1 seat until the 4 November 2008 special election is held.

On 21 February 2008 Governor Haley Barbour called a special election and runoff to fill former Congressman Roger Wicker's vacant seat. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the Tuesday 22 April 2008 primary, the two top vote-getters will proceed to a Tuesday 13 May 2008 runoff. The winning candidate will fill the seat until the end of the current Congress in January 2009. Travis W. Childers (Democrat) won the 13 May 2008 runoff.
