  • Congressman Nicola Tsongas (Democrat, Massachusetts House CD 5) was elected 16 October 2007 to fill the vacant seat.
  • Congressman Martin T. "Marty" Meehan (Democrat, Massachusetts House CD 5) resigned 1 July 2007 to become Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
  • Congressman Juanita Millender-McDonald (Democrat, California CD 37) passed away 22 April 2007 at the age of 68 from cancer.
  • Congressman Charles Whitlow "Charlie" Norwood (Republican, Georgia CD 10) passed away 13 February 2007 at the age of 65 from lung and liver cancer.

  • Congressman Jo Ann S. Davis (Republican, Virginia CD 1) passed away 6 October 2007 at the age of 57 from breast cancer.
  • Congressman Robert Latta (Republican, Ohio CD 5) was elected 11 December 2007 to fill the vacant seat.
  • Congressman Rob Wittman (Republican, Virginia CD 1) was elected 11 December 2007 to fill the vacant seat.

Wednesday 5 September 2007: Congressman Paul E. Gillmor (Republican), 68, passed away suddenly Tuesday night. First elected in 1988, he served 10 terms in the House. Media reports state that when Congressman Gillmor did not show up this morning, his staff become concerned. He was later found dead in his apartment.

On Friday 14 September 2007, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland announced that a 6 November 2007 Special Party Primary (Democratic and Republican) and an 11 December 2007 Special General election will be held to fill the vacancy caused by the passing of Congressman Paul E. Gillmor (Republican). The filing deadline is 28 September 2007. The winner will complete the late Congressman's term which ends in January 2009. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Congressman Jo Ann S. Davis (Republican, Virginia CD 1) who passed away on 6 October 2007 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. She was 57. Mrs. Davis was first diagnosed in October 2005 and underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy. On 7 March 2007, she announced that her breast cancer had returned. The Congressman was first elected to Congress in 2000.

On Tuesday 23 October 2007, Virginia Governor Timothy M. "Tim" Kaine called a Tuesday 11 December 2007 Special Election in CD 1 to fill the remainder of the term.

The Democratic and Republican Parties held nomination conventions for the special election on Saturday 10 November 2007.
