  • 1 January 2005 - Congressman Robert T. "Bob" Matsui - Democrat - California CD 5 passed away at the age of 63.
  • 8 March 2005 - Special Election - California CD 5. Doris Matsui (Democrat), the wife of the late Congressman Robert T. "Bob" Matsui, is elected to fill the vacant seat.
  • 29 April 2005 - Congressman Rob Portman - Republican - Ohio CD 2. The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Congressman Portman as U.S. Trade Representative. Congressman Portman issued a letter of resignation from his House Seat effective 29 April 2005.
  • 2 August 2005 - Special Electon - Ohio CD 2., Jean Schmidt (Republican) is elected to fill the vacant seat.
  • 2 August 2005 - Congressman Christopher Cox - Republican - California CD 48 resigned. President George W. Bush nominated Congressman Christopher Cox to the position of Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission on 2 June 2005.
  • 28 November 2005 - Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham - Republican - California CD 50 resigned, effective at close of business 1 December, from the U.S. House after pleading guilty to Federal charges involving bribes, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion.

On 11 January 2005, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called a Tuesday 8 March 2005 Special Election to fill the House CD 5 Seat vacated upon the 1 January 2005 death of Congressman Robert T. "Bob" Matsui. Congressman Matsui, 63, passed away due to complications from Myelodysplastic Disorder (MDS), a rare stem cell disorder. He was first elected in 1978.

On 2 June 2005, President George W. Bush nominated Congressman Christopher Cox for the position of Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Congressman Cox resigned from the U.S. House effective at the close of business 2 August and was sworn as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission on 3 August 2005. Congressman Cox was first elected in 1988.

On 15 August 2005 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called a special election.

If a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the Tuesday 4 October 2005 election, that candidate is elected. If no candidate receives a majority, the top vote getter from each party will compete in a Tuesday 6 December 2005 runoff. Reference California Elections Code 10700-10707.
